Pattern Digitizing: Converting Fashion Patterns to Digital

by Alejandro Esparza September 22, 2018

Patterns are transforming from their initial form of physical templates to a more advanced and accurate format. In the industries of sewing and fashion designing, a pattern forms the basis of the garments produced. A pattern serves as the template. It is used to trace parts of a garment out onto the fabric. This helps in the cutting and assembly of the garment as per the design. These patterns may be in the form of paper usually. However, patterns are also found in a sturdier form such as paperboard or cardboard. This helps with the repeated use of a pattern, making it more durable. However, perhaps the most accurate and long-lasting way to create a pattern is to digitize it.

As technology has progressed, so has its implementation in the textile and garment manufacturing industries. This progress has been possible through the creation of pattern digitizing. The methods that are used to convert fashion patterns have been explored below to highlight how different garment and apparel companies have utilized this breakthrough.

Table Digitizers

Digitizing tables, also known as table digitizers, are specially used tables intended for pattern digitizing. They are lined with electromagnetics which can be used with their special companion mouse to help trace the outlines of patterns, navigating from point to point, one at a time. This particular mouse comes equipped with a series of buttons which help you navigate through the CAD and CAM program. The program is directly linked to the digitizer which creates the pattern digitally. The accuracy of the program execution depends upon the attention that is paid to detail as well as the experience of the user. Ultimately the design goes a long way in determining how well shirt patterns can be digitized. Before beginning to scan, the digitizer needs to be calibrated and the model must be placed on the table surface with the use of adhesive tape to ensure that it remains fixed.

Digitizing is a little yet pivotal piece of the article of clothing industry creation segment. For a considerable length of time the business has been depending on the moderate and tedious help of the Digitizing Table, however luckily new digitizing alternatives have been created to accelerate the procedure of example digitization while additionally giving prevalent precision.

Digitizing tables require extensive and tedious physical work. Digitizing tables are mistake inclined. If you send out your digitized examples to your CAD programming and discover an oversight, you should re-try the whole procedure.  You can just digitize one example at any given moment. Digitizing tables don't spare the photo picture of the cases. There is no real way to check if the digitized lines are exact. Other digitizing choices are computerized and significantly quicker and more precise than the digitizing table.

Try not to be hesitant to attempt new advancements. Albeit new items can appear to be more entangled than old strategies at first, they are concocted to encourage individuals' lives and enhance the coordination of an organization's task. However, table digitizers do present a problem. They are bulky in size, making them inconvenient concerning being portable. Moreover, since the process is extremely manual, you can only work with one pattern at a time. Tables digitizing makes the process of shirt pattern digitizing a slow process, indeed.

Alternatives to Table Digitizers

The table digitizers may present you with its own set of problems, but those can be easily remedied with the use of roll-up digitizers. Roll up digitizers address the purpose as the table digitizers. The difference is that roll up digitizers are thin, lightweight, and flexible. This awards them with the advantage of being handier than their table counterparts. The roll up digitizer can be stretched out upon a flat surface, and rolled up once the process is finished. Another benefit that roll up digitizers offer is that they cost less in comparison with table digitizers. They do, however, require a flat surface upon which they can be rolled across. However, the issue of speed remains as the speed of digitizing is as slow as it was with table digitizers.

Scanner Digitizers

Scanning technology is hailed as the savior once more. Scanner digitizers are the third alternative for digitizing your shirt pattern. Scanner digitizers, as the name suggests, are devices that function the same as scanners. These scanner digitizers can scan an image from a short range. They scan images from close by and, with the use of image processing technologies, process the scanned copy to create a digitized pattern. Although these offer greater speed than the two alternatives listed above, these are the most expensive alternative. Although, these may take up a large space depending on their size.
